At United Farmers of Alberta Co-operative, we believe it’s important to give back to the communities where our members work and live.
The pandemic has meant that now, more than ever, we need to pay special attention to mental health. Today’s statistics show that more people in our province are in need of mental health support and resources. It’s one of the reasons why UFA is supporting the Blankets of Love Foundation for Mental Health, with a $1,000 donation.
The Blankets of Love Foundation for Mental Health is a national charitable organization that provides quilts to patients who are in hospital for the treatment of mental illness.
This is truly a labour of love, with these special quilts handcrafted by volunteers in the community and then generously donated to hospitals that offer mental health services.
Kimberly MacDonald, Community Investment Manager at UFA, is proud of the impact Blankets of Love is having in the community.
“Supporting grassroots organizations like Blankets of Love is our way of wrapping our arms around those who need comfort, a warm hug, and to feel safe. We are a co-operative built on co-operative values, which includes taking care of our fellow neighbour; sometimes that comes in the form of programming and sponsorship, and sometimes it comes in the form of a warm blanket.”
This past December, volunteers visited the Alberta Hospital in Edmonton, delivering 318 handmade quilts and blankets to patients just before Christmas.
Sheila Ethier is the powerhouse behind Blankets of Love and says they wanted to offer some special gifts to those isolated due to COVID-19 restrictions.
“Family and friends aren’t able to connect with their loved ones, and often patients who are in hospital with mental illness, are the last to get a gift or flowers or cards. The impact these quilts have on these patients is enormous.” says Ethier.
“We are so grateful for the support of community partners like UFA,” she adds. “Despite the challenges that have come along with the pandemic, I am humbled at the kindness of strangers and how tragedy really can bring out the best of the human spirit.”
